Overwatch Players Are Split on the Most Recent Mercy Nerf

Mercy is subject to yet another nerf in the PTR, and players are divided.

Mercy is receiving yet another nerf as Overwatch developers try to find a way to balance one of the game's most popular heroes.

In a post on the Overwatch forums, principal designer Geoff Goodman announced that Mercy's Valkyrie ultimate will no longer make Resurrect instant or grant a bonus charge of Resurrect. In addition, Mercy's speed boost as part of Guardian Angel has been decreased by 50 percent, and the duration of the entire Ultimate has been reduced from 20 seconds to 15 second.

These nerfs come off the heels of previous nerfs to her Ultimate ability which added an interruptible charge-up time to her Resurrect ability. But Blizzard says that even with those previous nerfs, her Valkyrie ability was enough to make-up for those previous changes. "Additionally, we're toning back the amount of mobility Valkyrie provides through Guardian Angel and reducing its duration to overall reduce the power of this ability," writes Goodman.

The reaction online to her nerf has been equal part despair and rejoicing. Opinion is divided between players who believe that Mercy has been the subject to ever-and-ever debilitating nerfs, and players who say that these changes to her character need to happen until she's finally balanced. One thread on Reddit even reminded players that Mercy already received four major changes previously, and she's still a mandatory pick.

Meanwhile there are plenty of disgruntled Mercy mains who are frustrated that their favorite character is subject to continuous changes, most of which have made the character weaker. Mercy mains also have sounded off on other Overwatch characters who are in much more need of nerfs than Mercy, like Junkrat.

Coincidentally, Junkrat was the other character to receive a nerf with the upcoming PTR update. His Concussion Mine will now deal less damage if a target is further away from the blast center. Goodman says that this is so that Junkrat players will have to be more accurate with their mine throws without sacrificing the damage dealt by the mines.

As we've come to see, Blizzard does not mess around when it comes to balancing Overwatch. Since launch, there have been wholesale revisions of entire characters just to make the game more fair. And even then, PTR changes are where Blizzard fine tunes its balancing decisions, so the Mercy nerf is subject to change based on feedback.

What a joke of a game. Why even bother learning the meta if it's just going to change every few weeks? And Blizzard wants to make this an e-sport.

She's just a super fun character to play, especially for a lot of women, and they are driving those players away from the game.
