Since the launch of Overwatch in May, we've received that new Competitive Play mode and our first new character, Ana. Today at Gamescom, Blizzard Entertainment announced the first new map for the title: Eichenwalde.
Eichenwalde is built for Overwatch's Assault/Escort game mode, where the attacking team has to escort a battering ram to the doors of an ancient castle, while the defenders seek to keep them away. Though the map takes place in Reinhardt home country of Germany, there's no direct connection to Reinhardt himself. It's entirely possible the map may feature in the upcoming Bastion-focused animated short, The Last Bastion.
"The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army," Blizzard explained about the map's backstory, something most players will never even read or care about. "Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight."
There's also probably some clues for Sombra, the rumored next character for the game. Blizzard has been seeding hints about Sombra since Ana launched, so we're getting closer to a final announcement. Probably at Blizzcon 2016 in November.
