Overwatch's New Support Sniper is Ana, Not Sombra

Blizzard reveals the next character in the Overwatch roster.

As Overwatch fans guessed, the next Overwatch character is a Support class sniper, providing healing from behind the scope of a rifle. The big news is that the character is not named Sombra, instead going by her given name, Ana. The character launches in the Public Test Realm today.

"One of the founding members of Overwatch, Ana uses her skills and expertise to defend her home and the people she cares for," reads Ana's bio on the official Overwatch website.

"She remained on active duty well into her fifties, until she was believed to have been killed during a hostage rescue mission by the Talon operative known as Widowmaker," the bio continues. "In truth, Ana survived that encounter, despite being gravely wounded and losing her right eye. During her recovery, she wrestled with the weight of a life spent in combat, and she chose to stay out of the world's growing conflicts. However, as time passed, she realized she could not sit on the sidelines while people threatened her city and the innocents around her."

You can find out more about the character's backstory in her origin video, including her connection to existing Overwatch character, Pharah.

Ana primary weapon is her Biotic Rifle, which heals allies from long range or deals ongoing damage to enemies. Her secondary ability is the Sleep Dart, which can knock opponents out, giving your team time to rally or exploit weaknesses. Any damage will wake a sleeping target. Then there's Ana's Biotic Grenade, which heals allies in a small area and increases the healing they receive, meaning you can expect some solid synergy with Mercy or Lucio. Any enemies within the range of Biotic Grenade take damage and can't be healed for a certain period of time.

Finally, Ana Ultimate ability is Nano Boost, which gives her teammates increased damage, improved movement speed, and greater damage resistance. It's great for a point push, just like Lucio's Sound Barrier.

If you want to play Ana, open up Overwatch on PC. Right over the Play button in your Battle.net client, select the region/account dropdown. Select "PTR: Overwatch". Once it downloads, you'll be able to play Ana in the Public Test Realm.

Looking forward to playing with Ana? Does Overwatch finally have it's 'Mom' to go with Soldier 76's 'Dad'? Let us know in the comments!
