Paper Mario: The Origami King Will Unfold on Switch This July
Surprise: the 2D hero is back.
The Paper Mario series is back with its first installment for the Switch. Nintendo surprise-dropped a trailer today for Paper Mario: The Origami King, a gorgeous-looking new RPG that's coming to Switch on July 17.
The trailer opens with the 2D paper Mario confronting an unsettling Princess Peach, who's been origami folded into 3D. According to the Nintendo site, the kingdom has been overtaken by King Olly and the Folded Soldiers. Mario will once again be teaming up with unlikely allies like Bowser, as well as a new partner Olivia, an origami character herself, to challenge King Olly.
Mario does have some new tricks through the 1,000-Fold Arms, which lets him extend his arms to interact with the environment. The battle system is new, too; taking place on a ring, Mario can line up enemies and hop across them in a damaging chain. It's almost like a puzzle within a battle.
The Paper Mario series has grown and changed a lot over the years since its Nintendo 64 debut. Though some agree and disagree on which Paper Marios are the better ones, this new installment looks like a pretty stylish and inventive way of imagining the series.
A new Paper Mario was first heard in rumblings alongside a number of 3D Mario remasters, which are reportedly due this year. Whether those arrive or not, this looks like an inventive new way to the bring the 2D version of the plumber onto the Nintendo Switch.
Paper Mario: The Origami King will launch for Nintendo Switch on July 17.
