Persona 5 Royal: How to Unlock the New Third Semester

Persona 5 Royal: How to Unlock the New Third Semester

Here's how you can unlock the new third semester in Persona 5 Royal.

One of the biggest new features of Persona 5 Royal is a brand new third semester of school, added in after the ending of the original game. At the true conclusion of 2017's Persona 5, you'd fight the God of Control, and you'd get the 'true ending' of the original, where all the Phantom Thieves would ride off into the sunset for a lovely ending. With Royal, you defeat the God of Control, and then the third semester begins, erasing the original true ending. In this guide, we'll be walking you through all the Persona 5 Royal third semester requirements, so you can reach all the brand new content that Atlus has stored within.

How to Unlock the Third Semester in Persona 5 Royal

To unlock the new third semester after you defeat the God of Control in Persona 5, there are a few requirements. We'll quickly run down what they are in the list below, and then explain them in greater detail further down.

  • Refuse to sell out the Phantom Thieves to Sae during interrogation.
  • Reach Maruki's Confidant rank 9 before November 17.

Refuse to Sell out the Phantom Thieves

This is really simple. At all times during the interrogation with Sae Niijima in the main portion of the game, you need to refuse to sell out your allies at all costs.

This means denying they exist, and denying that they aided you at all. The main occurrence of this actually takes place on 11/20, when Sae will ask you to sell your fellow Phantom Thieves and cooperate with her.

At this point, on this date, you need to refuse to cooperate with her. Protect your allies at all costs, refusing to even acknowledge their existence, and you'll maintain the bonds you've made with your friends while also working towards unlocking the third semester.

Reach Maruki's Confidant Rank 9 Before November 17

The other, perhaps slightly trickier requirement, is to reach Confidant level nine with Takuto Maruki before November 17. This means you need to accept Maruki's invitations for counselling sessions at Shujin Academy whenever possible, paying him a visit in the Nurse's Office.

Keep in mind that Maruki's corresponding social link is that of the Counsellor. If you want to level up your Confidant link with him as quickly as possible, make sure you're holding a Persona of the Counsellor link in your arsenal whenever you meet with him, and you'll increase your standing with him a little quicker than you normally would.

If you can meet both these requirements in the main portion of Persona 5 Royal, you'll successfully make it to the third semester. We're not going to spoil what takes place within this brand new chapter of the saga (because we're still making our way through it!), but it adds a full 15 hour epilogue onto the original game.
