Persona 5's Morgana Wants You to Go the F*ck to Sleep

Persona 5's Morgana Wants You to Go the F*ck to Sleep

No water. No bedtime story. No more stalling.

2016's Persona 5 is jam-packed with things to do. The activities range from utterly mundane ("Do your homework") to mind-melting ("Save the world from twisted metaphysical depictions of sins and demons that bring out the worst in humankind"). You could feasibly play, study, and fight all day and all night if not for one character in the game: Morgana.

Morgana is a pushy tuxedo cat who serves as the team's warrior-mascot, but he's infamous for gatekeeping your activities. He's especially well-known for telling Persona 5's protagonist to go to sleep after you spend an afternoon exploring a palace, which means you can't hit the town, work your job, or see your friends during the evening slot of time.

Morgana's demands that you go to sleep is a meme in the Shin Megami Tensei / Persona fandom. The character's voice actor, Cassandra Lee Morris, recently injected her influence into the joke by reading Go the F*ck to Sleep in Morgana's voice.

Go the F*ck to Sleep is a parody children's book by American author Adam Mansbach. Mansbach was struck by a particularly frustrated muse after trying to put his daughter to bed for two hours.

Lee Morris' reading of Go the F*ck to Sleep suggests Morgana views himself as the protector or surrogate parent of Persona 5's protagonist; if he doesn't send the boy to bed, who will? He might stay up all night with that seedy fortune teller. Anyway, it's a great reading of the story, though Samuel L Jackson's reading is still king.

Oh, and talk about timing: Kat and I discussed Persona 5 on the latest episode of Axe of the Blood God. Give it a listen.
