By bringing some of its best-loved Wii U games over to the Switch, Nintendo may also bring more attention to speedrunners of those games who stuck with them on the older, less successful platform. In the case of Pikmin 3 Deluxe, which doesn't even launch until Oct. 30, one runner has already come up with some new techniques unique to the Switch version. Turns out, there's a boss in the demo you normally can't reach.
Playing on the free demo released earlier this month, speedrunner APerson13 managed to defeat the Vehemoth Phosbat boss from the demo's start in just under ten minutes. That'd be an impressive time, perhaps, if the Phosbat was the intended endpoint for the demo, but it's actually not.
Nope, instead the player is supposed to fight the Vehemoth Phosbat a while after the small chunk of Pikmin 3's campaign included in the demo. Thanks to a mix of new and old out-of-bounds trickery, though, players can get to the boss fight, complete it, and even get to the dialogue afterwards where characters Alph and Charlie reunite.
Beyond that, though, it doesn't look like it's possible to keep playing on in the story beyond the demo. It's a neat speedrun, but it won't help players see too much more of Pikmin 3 Deluxe ahead of the release.
According to APerson13, who runs the Wii U version of Pikmin 3, the player character runs faster in the Switch version and some new invisible walls have been added to try and prevent skips like this, which necessitated some rerouting to the Phosbat. Speedrunning implications aside, it's certainly intriguing to hear that Nintendo's made Pikmin 3 Deluxe a bit faster, as early analysis of the upcoming Super Mario 3D World port for the Switch suggests Nintendo also upped the player speed in it, too.
At the very least, this goes to show that Nintendo hasn't just added some new stages to Pikmin 3 and called it a day for the Deluxe version. Changing up the player speed and attempting to patch out skips means big things for the speedrunning community, but it'll hopefully also mean that the average player is in for a more polished, responsive Pikmin 3 experience on Switch.
