From this point onward, PlatinumGames is relinquishing co-development of the action-RPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink, a game that has been in co-development with Cygames since 2016. The news came in the form of two separate statements from Cygames and PlatinumGames, respectively, each noting that the partnership is coming to a close because of Platinum's contract on the project ending.
"We would like to express our thanks to everyone who has shown interest in the project, and ask that the same support should continue for Granblue Fantasy: Relink as its production continues forward," wrote PlatinumGames in a brief statement. In Cygames' own statement, the company asserts that "100 percent" of the Relink's remaining development will be handled internally.
Granblue Fantasy is a smash hit mobile and browser based RPG from Cygames, originally launching back in 2014 and reuniting longtime Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and art director Hideo Minaba of Final Fantasy fame. Over the years, it's featured many crossover events, including ones with Persona 5 and Cardcaptor Sakura. Last year, it celebrated its 23 million players milestone.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink is one of two additional Granblue Fantasy games currently in development. Granblue Fantasy Versus is an upcoming fighting game in collaboration between Cygames and Arc System Works. Beyond the Granblue universe, Cygames notably co-developed the mobile RPG Dragalia Lost with Nintendo.
Another Cygames collaboration, Lost Order, was announced in 2016, but hasn't seen much news since. Though, it is still on Platinum's games page, unlike Granblue Fantasy: Relink which has recently been removed. PlatinumGames isn't left without a project in this shake up either. Currently, the action-oriented studio is working on Bayonetta 3, Babylon's Fall, and the mobile game World of Demons.
