A classic PlayStation-era RPG is getting the remaster treatment next year. Square Enix has announced SaGa Frontier Remastered, bringing the PSX journey to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam in summer 2021.
The new version of SaGa Frontier won't just be a remaster of the original's content. Alongside the team of eight from the original SaGa Frontier, a new protagonist named Fuse has been added as a playable character. There will also be new events and features in the remaster, alongside the visual remaster of the PlayStation RPG. You can get a glimpse of how it looks in the trailer below.
Seeing SaGa Frontier get some attention among the bevy of remasters and remakes is pretty neat. It was snubbed for the U.S. PlayStation Classic lineup, though it did make the cut for Japan's PlayStation Classic, alongside Parasite Eve, Armored Core, and two Arc the Lad games. Then again, the U.S. PlayStation Classic was overall pretty slim on the RPGs that made the console so memorable.
Still, its stylish look and selfish over-indulgence remain unique properties that make the SaGa series stand out. The chance to revisit Frontier is pretty exciting, especially as fellow PlayStation-era RPGs get their own remasters or even full-blown remakes. Even as we build up into new RPGs in the coming year, it's nice to have a good way of revisitng the games that got us here.
SaGa Frontier Remastered will arrive in summer 2021 for PS4, Switch, mobile, and PC via Steam.
