Prologue, PlayerUnknown's Mysterious Next Project, Will Not be a Shooter

It isn't PUBG 2, either.

A lot of trailers at The Game Awards favor bombast over mystery and subtlety, but the first tease for Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene's next project is downright obscure. We've seen less than 20 seconds of Prologue, the first project from Greene since he stepped away from development on PUBG, his eponymous battle royale. The teaser doesn't give away much, but Greene has said a little bit about his aims with the new project.

Forbes contributor Dave Thier touched base with Greene about Prologue what Prologue is and came away with a short list of what it isn't. Namely, it's not a sequel to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, nor is it a shooter. It also seems like Prologue is being envisioned as a stepping stone to something bigger and more ambitious. "I've got some pretty big dreams about what I want to achieve, that I'm not quite ready to achieve," Greene tells Forbes. "It will require some new tech."

To that end, Greene and the 25-person team at PlayerUnknown Productions—formerly PUBG Special Projects—are working on Prologue as its "first step towards building new technologies," hence the title. Greene says he dreams of creating "worlds at scale," capable of supporting thousands of players in spaces measuring "hundreds of kilometers by hundreds kilometers." In other words, Greene's team is looking to create something several orders of magnitude more complex than "100 people duke it out on an island."

Scale ambitions aside, the DNA Prologue shares with Greene's genre-defining battle royale looks to be its goal of facilitating "unique and memorable experiences" for players. "With PUBG I have all these people coming up to me and telling me their stories, and it inspires me to affect people in that way," says Greene.

Hopefully we'll learn more about Prologue soon, but hearing that it isn't merely aiming to be "the next evolution of battle royale" or something along those lines should help pique the interest of anyone who's grown bored of the genre.
