With the approaching launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony's gearing up to release two versions of the console. It seems fair to assume that most households looking to nab a PS5 will only want one or the other: the model with a disc drive, or the one without. Judging by a bit of code found on PlayStation's official online store, though, it seems Sony may limit pre-orders to just one PS5 console, regardless of which version or versions you may want to purchase.
Following up on a Reddit post from user Kgarvey, IGN has confirmed the existence of an error message indicating a pre-order limit in the code for the official PlayStation Direct store page. The message identifies the PS5 by name and both different versions, so it's without a doubt intended for Sony's new console: "You can only purchase one version of the PS5 Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5 console to your cart." That wouldn't stop people from making multiple pre-orders from different retailers, but it could make things difficult for households that need more than one PS5 to get their orders in.
Of course, we don't yet know when pre-orders for the PS5 will go live, and it seems very likely that Sony would spell out such a policy ahead of time. Last week, in response to widespread rumors of an imminent PS5 price reveal and pre-order launch, PlayStation's head of global marketing Eric Lempel confirmed that Sony will confirm a date for pre-orders ahead of time.
"It's not gonna happen with a minute's notice," Lempel says. "We're going to, at some point, let you know when you can pre-order a PlayStation 5."
According to recent reports, Sony is anticipating stronger demand for the PS5 than it did earlier this year. The company is now said to be aiming for 10 million consoles manufactured by the end of 2020, up from an original estimate between 5 and 6 million units.
We still don't know pricing for either version of the PS5 or for the Xbox Series X. With reports suggesting that Microsoft may unveil another new Xbox model in August, it may be a while yet before we see pricing and pre-order pages for Microsoft or Sony's next-gen devices. It's hard to come to any purchasing decisions at this stage, but if you were planning on pre-ordering two PS5s for whatever reason, now might be a good time to figure out how you'll go about it. Otherwise, you may have to take turns playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales at launch.
