The next mind-bending psychic adventure from Double Fine will be spending just a little bit longer in development. As a new trailer was revealed today for Psychonauts 2, it also confirmed that the game will be bumped back to next year.
Shown as part of Xbox's July showcase for upcoming Xbox Series X games, Psychonauts 2 got a new trailer showcasing gameplay for the upcoming platformer. The footage also unveiled Jack Black as one of the voices in Psychonauts 2, playing the mysterious Mote of Light.
In the trailer's description, it says that Psychonauts 2 will arrive PlayStation 4, Xbox via Game Pass, and PC via Windows, Mac, and Linux in 2021. The psychic adventure will also be optimized for Series X.
Psychonauts 2 has been on a long journey, getting delayed once back in 2017 and has been in ongoing development since. Of course, Double Fine has also grown a great deal over the years, joining Xbox as part of its Xbox Game Studios last year.
With the new influx of Xbox support, it sounds like Psychonauts 2 has expanded beyond its original scope. Double Fine's Tim Schafer recently discussed how the acquisition affected the game, saying that being bought by Xbox let Psychonauts 2 be what it was "meant to be."
The next Psychonauts has impressed us with what it's shown so far, so the extra time will hopefully allow the game to flourish even more. We'll see what Double Fine is up to next year, but in the meantime, check out what Tim Schafer has been up to with our interview from last fall.
