Psychonauts 2 News July

Double Fine's long-awaited sequel is almost ready to invade our minds.

Like the original before it, Psychonauts 2 has had a pretty long and eventful development cycle, but it seems like Double Fine is just about ready to unleash Raz's next adventure. Today at Xbox's July Games Showcase, Double Fine revealed a release date for its long awaited sequel.

Psychonauts 2 will launch on TKTKTK. As it's a first-party Microsoft title, it'll be available for purchase or via Xbox Game Pass on PC and Xbox One. It's also launching for PlayStation 4.

First announced at The Game Awards in 2015, Double Fine then went on to raise money for Psychonauts 2's development through the crowdfunding platform Fig. In 2017, Double Fine released a short VR title, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, that links the events of the first and second game. For a time, Starbreeze was set to publish Psychonauts 2, but it later ran into severe financial troubles. At Xbox's E3 press conference last year, Double Fine founder and president Tim Schafer appeared on stage to announce Double Fine's acquisition by Microsoft.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Schafer revealed that Double Fine had cut Psychonauts 2's boss fights prior to joining Xbox Game Studios, but that the team has since added them back in thanks to Microsoft's backing and budget. "Being able to complete the game in the way that it was meant to be was very important," Schafer said.

Now, well over a decade after Microsoft dropped an arrangement to publish the original Psychonauts, the sequel is nearing release as an Xbox Game Studios title. "I feel like this is my sweet, sweet revenge," Schafer joked to USgamer in an interview last year. "Making them finish paying for a game they never got to finish paying for."
