PUBG Scores a Surprise GOTY Win From The Steam Awards

Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Skyrim VR, and Grand Theft Auto 5 also took home awards.

The results of the 2018 Steam Awards have been announced today live on a broadcast. With players providing the votes, some unexpected names popped up in the awards.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds walked away with the Game of the Year Award, while CD Projekt Red won Best Developer. The studio's 2015 magnum opus, The Witcher 3, also won Best Environment, three years after it came out.

Although PUBG and The Witcher 3 are great games, neither of these two titles were brought up in 2018's larger game of the year conversations. That's because some of the biggest games that came out in 2018 either weren't available on PC or didn't come out on Steam.

Elsewhere, 2018's Game of the Year debate was dominated by either Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2, or Sony Santa Monica's God of War reboot. Neither of those games were available on PC. Other major releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Battlefield 5, and Fallout 76 were available on PC, but not on Steam. And while Fortnite continued to dominate the live-service space, it's only available through Epic's launcher.

This left Steam's 2018 game awards looking a little dated. Even though there were great 2018 awards candidates on Steam this year like Celeste, Monster Hunter: World, and The Return of the Obra Dinn; the only game that came out in 2018 and won an award was Assassin's Creed Odyssey (for Best Alternate History). And even with PUBG's success, 2018 was admittedly a turbulent year for the franchise after the rocky FIX PUBG campaign.

As developers look to release big PC games on their own storefronts like EA, Bethesda, and Activision; or look at alternatives like the Epic Games Store, the Steam Awards might find itself lacking candidates for future awards.

Here's a full list of winners for the 2018 Steam Awards below:

  • Game of the Year: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
  • VR Game of the Year: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
  • Labor of Love: Grand Theft Auto 5

  • Best Environment: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • Better With Friends: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
  • Best Alternate History: Assassin's Creed Odyssey
