The third PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds map is coming, and it's coming soon. Within the next four months soon, which means sometime around June 2018.
In a Steam update, PUBG Corp. shared to players that a roadmap of updates will be coming in March, along with details of the third PUBG map. It will join maps like the island map Erangel and the desert map Miramar.
"In March, the team will reveal what you can expect from us in the first half of 2018 in terms of our development and new content plans which, by the way, include a new map," said PUBG Corp in its Steam blog. The way it's phrased makes it sound as if the March roadmap will detail a new map coming in the first half of 2018.
PUBG Corp's Mephie Kim says that development of major features and systems in 2018 was delayed due to a shifting of focus towards cracking down on cheaters, which fans have started to complain have become a real problem in th game. In one instance, PUBG Corp banned 100,000 cheaters in a single wave.
"We would like to ask for our players' generous understanding that despite the team's eagerness to share what we have been planning and working on, the timing had to be changed," wrote PUBG Corp. "We do have a lot of exciting things that we want to share with you, including new content to provide more extensive battle royale experiences as well as improvements and modifications to create a deeper more realistic gameplay."
PUBG Corp has previously teased a couple maps in the past, including a level based near the Adriatic Sea that's supposedly similar in size to Erangel. That map reportedly combines some snowy mountains with a more mediterranean coastline. The map is also said to have a central, Soviet-style cosmodrome as one of its key features.
PUBG has recently faced stiff competition from Epic's own Fortnite: Battle Royale, which has seen a huge uptick in players, whereas PUBG has been met with a dip in player count. The long wait between updates in PUBG is hard to ignore compared to Fortnite's aggressive content scheduling. Though cheating remains a problem for both games.
