Some things just go too well together, so why bother splitting them up? A new Puyo Puyo Tetris is coming this year, to keep building on the one-two punch of puzzle gaming.
Revealed during today's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 launches on Dec. 8 for the Nintendo handheld. As for other platforms, they mostly fall on a similar launch date. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also get Dec. 8 launches, with next-gen versions on the way for Xbox Series X on Dec. 8 and PS5 later this holiday season as well. It'll also have free next-gen upgrades within console families (PS4 to PS5 and One to Series X).
As outlined on the PlayStation blog today, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will have a few new features for fans of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris. The new Skill Battle mode allows characters to use various abilities to affect battles between players. A new story mode will be in the sequel, and Sega says there will be "improved online gameplay," which is good in the current state of things.
The first Puyo Puyo Tetris game didn't make the biggest splash, but it came at just the right time for a host of Nintendo Switch owners who were looking to fill their memory cards with new games to play. As one of those fervent Switch game purchasers, I lost a good many hours to stacking Puyo blobs and Tetris blocks alike.
New competitive modes and narrative content is great, but I'm really just down for any excuse to Puyo Puyo and Tetris to my heart's content. Puyo Puyo Tetris drops onto its first round of platforms on Dec. 8, 2020.
