Rare is embarking on a new journey. While it also brought some updates for Sea of Thieves fans, Rare took the stage at today to debut the name of its next project, a new property called Everwild.
There wasn't too much shown of Everwild, which Rare says will be an experience that allows for "new ways to play in a natural and magical world." Helmed by executive producer Louise O'Connor, Everwild has a very painted, soft look to it. It seems to center on exploring the wilds and interacting with animals, though we didn't get any gameplay or more info beyond a name.
Of course, Rare is also still working on its living high-seas pirate game, Sea of Thieves. Despite a rocky start, this service game has become a fairly strong part of Microsoft's living catalog, adding new modes and widening the pool of players who can hop in. Today, Rare announced that firebombs would be arriving, alongside a new story-driven Tall Tale centered on the Ashen Dragon. Tall Tales are Sea of Thieves' narrative missions, which offer story to accentuate all the swashbuckling and thieving.
Rare didn't confirm whether Everwild will be coming to the current generation of consoles, or if it is planned for the next gen. Microsoft's next Xbox, currently called Project Scarlett, is due out holiday 2020. If Everwild's got a longer development process ahead of it, it's possible that Rare could be aiming for an IP debut on the new consoles, rather than the current crop.
We'll learn more about Everwild over the coming months.
