Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Will Bring Dimension-Hopping Antics to PS5

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Will Bring Dimension-Hopping Antics to PS5

Your favorite Lombax and robot duo are back.

Thank goodness we didn't have to wait long after Sony acquired Insomniac to see what the companies' plans are for Ratchet & Clank. A new game in the series, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, was just announced at Sony's big digital event devoted to PlayStation 5 games. It'll be the first in the franchise since 2016's Ratchet & Clank reimagining tied to that year's animated feature film.

True to the series' past, the new Ratchet & Clank title looks to be another colorful platformer with wildly inventive weapons, gadgets, and environments. It'll also prominently feature a dimensional rift mechanic, letting the star duo flip between new environments instantaneously.

This is the second Insomniac game making an appearance on today's stream, too. The first new game revealed for the show is a Spider-Man sequel starring Miles Morales, heading to PS5 this holiday.

While it's a nice surprise to see this comeback today, it's not totally out of left field. Sony acquired Insomniac Games and added it to PlayStation Worldwide Studios back in August 2019. At the time, Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden told The Hollywood Reporter that "things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future," a sign that a new installment was a definite possibility in the near future. Now, we know that new game will be Insomniac's first for the PS5.

Ratchet & Clank were also recently spotted in the new Marvel film-esque PlayStation Studios opening animation that will accompany first-party Sony titles for the PS5. We might not see other older Sony properties coming to the PS5 soon, but seeing Ratchet & Clank in that intro will sit quite well since they're starring in one of the first major titles announced for PS5.
