Red Dead Online's New PvP Mode Embraces GTA Online's Silliness

Fool's Gold is weird and I love it.

Red Dead Online is getting a major update next week which includes new events, modes, clothes, emotes, and more. Red Dead Online is also leaning into some of the silliness that defined Grand Theft Auto Online with a new mode called Fool's Gold.

Fool's Gold is a new Free Roam Event coming to Red Dead Online where players compete to collect a full suit of gold armor. Every player will control and equal part of the gold armor and try to kill one another for the complete set. Once covered in gold, they can go on a shiny rampage and rack up kills while looking like a rich version of the Tin Man.

It's a really dumb event that I kind of love. It reminds me of some of the weird events Grand Theft Auto Online hosted, and I hope Red Dead Online introduces more shenanigans like Fool's Gold.

Other updates coming next week include Fishing Challenges to compete for big game catches. What's even better is anybody competing in a Fishing Challenge will be immune to griefing players who might ambush unsuspecting fishers just looking to relax. There's also three new Showdown PvP modes: Up in Smoke, Spoils of War, and Plunder. These are capture modes where players will try and steal loot back and forth from opposing teams.

PS4 players will get early access to some of the new features like Open Target Races, where players must shoot checkpoint targets alongside finishing a horse race. They'll also get early access to the Jawbone Knife melee weapon, new clothes, and three emotes.

In what's becoming a regular part of the Red Dead Online beta, the new update will be preceded by a bonus XP week. Check out our Red Dead Online for our full guides on PvP, earning gold, and more.
