Resident Evil 3 Remake Will Have Fewer Endings, But Potentially More Carlos

Carlos might get a little more spotlight in the remake.

Hot off the heels of the Resident Evil 2 Remake's success, a new version of Resident Evil 3 is on its way. But despite its faithfulness to the source material in some respects, other notable features are getting left on the cutting room floor, including key choices and the multiple endings they entailed.

New details about the remake have emerged from an Official PlayStation Magazine UK feature (via ResetEra and Reddit). One of Resident Evil 3's interesting features was the way you could make choices that would end up ultimately impacting which ending of the game you got, but it appears like that won't be the case with Resident Evil 3 Remake. When OPM asks whether the remake will return with a mix of endings, producer Peter Fabiano says, "No."

While it's a bummer, it looks like Resident Evil 3 is getting more in other areas of the game. Fabiano tells OPM that Carlos Oliveira, a secondary protagonist to Jill Valentine, will have "his own interesting section to play through." The Resident Evil 2 Remake did something similar, expanding the story out to moments like a stealth sequence with Sherry, and Carlos already had a playable section in the original.

OPM hints at more Carlos, though there isn't confirmation whether that means his brief moment in the spotlight will get some embellishment. Speaking to Famitsu (via VGC), producer Masachika Kawata says the changes to Carlos' design also extend to his personality in the story.

It also sounds like the new Nemesis will be absolutely terrifying. The ever-present monster stalking the members of S.T.A.R.S. is back, and OPM's interview says the Remake team has been building on its Tyrant tech from Resident Evil Remake 2 to build up Nemesis.

The interview also goes into photogrammetry and how the team used real-life scans for in-game visuals. A paragraph near the end hints that Nemesis itself might have benefited from this technique, and the mere thought of a replica Nemesis is now haunting me. If it's anywhere near as terrifying as the Tyrant, aka Mr. X, the RE3 Remake will probably make some blood run cold.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is due out April 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you're looking for a tease of what's to come right now, you can go hunting for Nemesis in the recently released Resident Evil 2 Remake demo.
