Resident Evil 7 Is Now the Best-Selling Game in the Series

With 7.9 million total copies shipped.

Just yesterday, Capcom published updated sales figures for its best-selling games list. Among those games is Resident Evil 7, which now stands tall as the best-selling game in the entire horror series.

2017's Resident Evil 7 now sits pretty at 7.9 million total copies sold. According to Capcom's newly-published sales figures, it's beating out Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 to emerge as the best-selling game in the series, as the two sold 7.7 and 7.6 million units respectively.

It's actually interesting to note that positions two through five on Capcom's top 10 best-selling games list are all Resident Evil titles. It's Resident Evil 2 Remake that comes in just behind the aforementioned trio, having managed to ship an impressive 7.2 million copies. Rising above all else is 2018's Monster Hunter: World, which is Capcom's single most successful game ever at 16 million copies sold.

This all comes after Capcom previously announced the Resident Evil series had surpassed 100 million lifetime sales earlier this year in March. The franchise is now Capcom's best-selling video game series ever, far surpassing the Monster Hunter franchise, which comes in at number two with 64 million copies sold.

It's weird to think that Resident Evil 7 was once seen as a fairly polarizing reboot for Capcom's horror series. Ditching the third-person blend of action and survival horror for a first-person view and a distinct lack of zombies, Resident Evil 7 has been nothing short of a success in rebooting the series, followed up by the fantastic Resident Evil 2 Remake, and the solid-if-not-quite-as-good Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Capcom isn't exactly slowing down on Resident Evil releases in the near future. Resident Evil Village is slated to launch next year for next-gen consoles, and there have been rumors of an ambitious Resident Evil 4 Remake, following in the same vein as the two recent horror remakes.
