Resident Evil 8 Likely Set in Romania, According to In-Game Currency

Looks like Ethan's heading to Eastern Europe.

When Resident Evil 8: Village was revealed last week, there wasn't any official word on where the game would take place. However one tiny detail from a developer diary on the game gives away the in-game location as Romania.

Take a look through the special Developer Message video from Resident Evil 8 developers Peter Fabiano and Tsuyoshi Kanda. The pair detail some of the new additions to the sequel, including the inventory system right around the two minute 50 second mark. Approximately eight seconds later, you can see the in-game currency called 'Lei' in the top right corner of the screen.

This is the currency of Romania. The singular version of the currency is called Leu, while the plural is referred to as Lei, the name of the currency in Resident Evil 8: Village. Right now, there's approximately one US Dollar to every 4.29 Romanian Leu, so Ethan's going to be living pretty well in Romania if he converts some cash before he heads over there.

The reveal trailer for Resident Evil 8 is just below. Protagonist Ethan Winters is back once again for more scares, ditching the swamps of Louisiana for the snow-capped mountains of Romania. Oh, and Chris Redfield is back and he's absolutely jacked now.
