It's been building up for a while, and now Risk of Rain 2 is ready to open the floodgates. The co-op roguelike shooter leaves Steam Early Access and officially launches on August 11, with some new content coming in its launch update.
Though it was already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch alongside its Steam Early Access, the launch of Risk of Rain 2 is a little different. It's going to finally add a concluding boss for runs, so if you don't want to just endlessly blast through repeating areas, you can challenge the boss on a new stage, The Moon. A new Survivor also joins the ranks: The Captain can drop in help from an orbiting dropship, while wielding a shotgun-rifle of his own as well.
There are also new items, skill variants, and lore entries on the way as well. Launch also signals a price hike to $24.99, however, so if you want to grab Risk of Rain 2 at its Early Access price you should probably get on that.
Risk of Rain 2 is the 3D sequel to the niche but fondly remembered original Risk of Rain. It sets up to four Survivors against gradually escalating odds, as they try to storm through levels and build up the power needed to match increasingly powerful enemies. It made my own Game of the Year list last year, and while I've since dropped off a bit, a new Survivor and a challenging new boss seems like a good reason to jump back in.
