It'll soon be time to build another legacy on the failures of a million heirs and ancestors. Rogue Legacy 2, the sequel to the memorable roguelike about a family and its castle, hits Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store on July 23.
The original Rogue Legacy pit a family and its ceaseless line of heirs against a shifting castle, as you tried generation after generation to destroy the evils within. In Rogue Legacy 2, it looks like the scope is expanding; the player gets to build a castle and explore a kingdom, hoping to put a stop to the curse that's befallen the familial line. Hopefully, the curse that keeps making this family run headlong into areas filled with skeletons and giant floating eyeballs.
Rogue Legacy was one of the earlier games in the roguelike craze that has swept up the last decade, and it had good reason to be. Its steady progression, run over run, made every failure still feel like a step forward, and its various conditions and attributes for each heir added new boons and challenges to each run.
It looks like this sequel is no different, bringing in a number of new heir attributes. It also looks like Cellar Door Games is opting for a more drawn aesthetic than pixels and sprites, much like Streets of Rage 4. If it works out as well for Rogue Legacy as it did for Streets, then it should be a good time.
The genealogical rogue-lite grinder opens up on July 23 for PC, on both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
