Last week, Capcom released its annual company report for 2018, which noted that things were looking up, with the exception of one game: Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.
"Sales of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which targeted the North American and European markets, were weak," said Capcom in the report. The release document also included a lengthy section about Capcom's efforts to rehabilitate and reboot Street Fighter 5, a task which has proven successful. Now it looks like Capcom may turn those efforts towards Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.
Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite was dealt a huge blow after a troubled launch when organizers of Evo 2018 announced that it wouldn't be a part of the main lineup of titles. It was a stunning vote of no confidence. The official Marvel vs Capcom Twitter account stopped posting anything in February of this year, and the game's last patch, 1.08, was back in May. Fans had given up completely.
That which is dead may live again though. According to Reddit rumor poster DasVergeben, Capcom is planning a massive update for Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. That update may also see the game rebranded as Marvel vs Capcom 4. DasVergeben isn't perfect, but the poster has correctly offered up previous leaks, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming to Injustice 2 and Ridley and Simon Belmont being in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Taking all of this with a grain of salt, here's what the poster is saying about the rumored Marvel vs Capcom 4.
"I should probably mention that when it does get announced, it will be called Marvel vs Capcom 4. I do not know what that could mean for the game itself and the changes, but it will be a complete rebranding effort to make people forget that [Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite] existed. They are rinsing the shame of that away," says the poster.
"No one knows anything substantial. Believe me. I've been asking around. All that is known is that an update is real and happening. No one has any details that have leaked out regarding what exactly is happening with it or what all characters it will be adding," they mention in another post. "The characters that I and people like [Fighting game Youtuber Maximilian Dood] have heard (Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Asura, Gill, Lady, and Rashid / Vergil) would be the most locked in logical inclusions to expect though. That is at least until something substantial does come out about it, that is the place to start with when it comes to expectations."
In another post, DasVergeben notes that the update is "early in development" and nothing will likely be revealed until next year. Former Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite producer Peter "Combofiend" Rosas left Capcom in 2017 to join Marvel Games; according to the poster, Rosas is responsible for re-opening the dialog between Capcom and Marvel regarding MvC.
One of the big missteps of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite was the lack of X-Men characters, in favor of heroes that have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Disney's acquisition of Fox, it's possible that those X-Men characters could see a return. Regardless, this is wholly a rumor right now.
