Scott Ryder Can Romance Jaal in the Newest Mass Effect Andromeda Patch

The handsome alien becomes a romance option for male characters.

BioWare released a new patch for Mass Effect Andromeda which along with improved customization options for your character, allows for Scott Ryder to romance a handsome alien.

BioWare's latest 1.08 patch for Mass Effect Andromeda expands the character creator, allowing for greater control over Ryder's appearance. Two new heads, a male head and female head, were added as well as new complexion options that allow for a greater range of skin tones. Additionally, all hairstyles are unlocked for both sexes as well as a bald option.

Players can also adjust their look onboard the Tempest in the middle of the game. I kind of hope that the other characters react a bit if you decide to change your character's look drastically mid-game.

The biggest bit of news is that Scott Ryder can now pursue Jaal as a romance option, something I've seen Andromeda players ask for online. BioWare issued a statement regarding the new romance and how it came to be included in the patch.

"Scott Ryder did not have a same-sex squadmate available as a romance option, nor could the achievement for completing three romances be achieved with only male same-sex partners. And as the angara have expressed their fluidity in how they perceive gender, it seemed only natural that Scott could have a relationship with Jaal."

"However, we understand that a character's orientation is an important part of what makes them feel real. The relationships with your crew are some of the most loved and cherished parts of our games, so we wanted to make sure we got it right. We consulted with members of the LGBTQ community, both externally and within our own studios. After carefully considering all feedback, we decided this was an important change to make, and one that made sense for Jaal, Scott, and the angara."

The new Jaal romance option encompassed a full blown effort on the Andromeda dev team to create a new scenario for the character.

"Our writing, editing, and animation teams worked together to ensure this change made sense for Jaal's character, and the result is a relationship we hope feels as fulfilling and memorable for Scott as it does for Sara."

BioWare hasn't announced when the patch will go live, but Jaal's male romance will probably make for some new dialogue and scenarios to explore in Andromeda. A full list of patch notes can be found here.

Our review said that Mass Effect Andromeda "falls short of its predecssors, but it's still a competently executed open-world action RPG with an interesting world and tons of quests to complete." Unfortunately, the game never really takes full advantage of its setting. Time will tell how BioWare will continue to tinker with Andromeda to address some of these complaints.
