Sea of Thieves is Rare's Best-Selling Launch Month Game in Over 20 Years

Ahoy matey!

The NPD group has published its monthly list of video game sales and there are some surprises mixed in here for the month of March. To nobody's surprise Far Cry 5 dominated the charts in March, but there were some strong showings particularly for Sea of Thieves which took the number two spot for the month.

Ubisoft's Far Cry 5 debuted to huge sales, becoming the top-selling title of March 2018. It is the best-selling Far Cry game in the franchise, overtaking previous franchise best, Far Cry 3 by nearly double the full-game sales. Ubisoft is also the leading publisher in 2018 year to date.

However, Sea of Thieves might be the bigger story as the game debuted as the second best-selling game of March, and the eight best-selling game of 2018 year to date. In fact, Sea of Thieves did so well in March it also became the highest launch month sales for any Rare title ever since the NPD Group first started tracking sales back in 1995.

Rounding out the top five for the month are MLB 18: The Show which also overtook MLB 14: The Show as the franchise best debut, Kirby Star Allies which likewise became the best debut for a Kirby game, and Grand Theft Auto 5, which continues to do insanely well for Rockstar Games and Take-Two.
