Sega Celebrates St. Patrick's Day With a Sonic OC: Irish the Hedgehog

Come for the silly joke, stay for the Irish folk cover of "City Escape."

Today's St. Patrick's Day, and while the current state of the world might put a damper on large gatherings where people pinch each other, toss back beers, and consume ungodly amounts of corned beef, it won't stop silly posts online. The official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account, no stranger to memes (for better or worse), is celebrating St. Paddy's with a new Sonic original character: Irish the Hedgehog.

The origins of Irish the Hedgehog actually date back a year ago. In March 2019, the Sonic Twitter account posted a St. Patrick's Day message featuring Jet the Hawk, pictured sporting a shamrock-adorned top hat and a bright red beard. Popular streamer and Ireland native Jacksepticeye then tweeted in response, asking if he could voice Irish the Hedgehog. The Sonic account said he was welcome to, and that was that—until now.

Jacksepticeye and Sonic's social media team put together a message from Irish, presented in the style of those Sonic Adventure 2 recap interstitials. As far as memes go, it's a pretty high-effort production: the art for Irish, a far cry from any MS Paint "Sanic" portraits, looks worryingly official. Really, what's stopping Sega from putting Irish in the next Sonic title?

Irish's message is gamely delivered by Jacksepticeye, but the real icing on the cake here is the Irish folk music rendition of "City Escape" that plays in the background. It was created by the band Hyper Potions in collaboration with Jun Senoue, sound director for the Sonic Adventure games. Hearing Jacksepticeye say "Sonk" is funny for a second, but this lively version of Sonic's best soundtrack cut will probably have fans doing a jig for years to come.

Anyway, that's Irish the Hedgehog. A little bit of levity should go a long way this week, and as corny as this gag might be, it's also not cringeworthy. There's certainly far worse fodder for topical humor floating about—and that said, please refrain from being an eejit about St. Patrick's Day celebrations today. Don't go out to crowded bars and don't rely on the luck of the Irish to stay safe and healthy. Maybe all those Sonic characters are onto something with their shared affinity for wearing gloves.
