Sega Genesis Mini Announced at Sega FES 2018, See it Here

Sega does what... you know the rest.

News by Matt Kim, .

Sega announced the existence of a Sega Genesis mini today at Sega Fes. The tiny console was shown off during the press conference, but not a lot of details were shared.

The Sega Genesis mini is styled after the Nintendo NES Classic and SNES Classic and looks to be a miniaturized version of Sega's classic console but presumably pre-loaded with classic Sega games. You can see an image of the console below.

The Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive in Japan and Europe, first released in 1989 brought with it famous games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Mortal Kombat, and Castlevania. Sega did not announce what games will be included in the Genesis mini, nor release date and price.

Sega's other announcements from the event includes the news that Shenmue 1 and 2 will be re-released in HD for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and that a new mainline Sakura Wars game is in development.

This is a developing story and we will have more information as it becomes available to us.

Wasn't there already a mini version of the Genesis around the time the NES mini came out? Also them also doing the Ultimate Genesis Collection again just seem weird to do. I mean great for people that want a mini version to have fun with and collect. But it's not really the same as the NES/SNES mini considering how tight Nintendo is with it's games.

Actually seeing them redo Ultimate Genesis Collection kind of makes me sad that Master System games are not really part of the collection again. I mean I would mostly just play Phantasy Star 1 but it would be nice to show off a bit more of their older games that some might have missed out on.

As long as they can manage to keep it the hell away from Atgames (however they capitalize it).

@moochan What you're remembering is the piece of trash that AtGames has been re-re-re-re-releasing onto the market for years. It's garbage, and this sounds like Sega finally attempting to do it right.

This could be really cool. What I really want though is an Analogue GT, if you get my meaning.

This is one area in which I'm totally fine with Sega copying Nintendo! The mini-console as a way to revive old consoles is a great concept. It's a great way to make the old new again!

I'd love to see this happen to some other systems. Like a mini-TG16, or a mini-NeoGeo! That'd be cool!

I think we should all be very careful about getting excited about this, Nintendo Life had a story just the other day with the president of Sega Japan saying he wants to import AtGames’ mini Genesis. So this might all be a total waste of plastic and silicon.

Oh boy! I hope they have the same 10 games they port to every goddamn system. Wake me up if they actually put interesting games (general chaos, ranger x) on it.

Will we finally get PS1 on the same platform as PSII through IV? Or is that just a crazy Phantasy?

Seventeen years after discontinuing the Dreamcast, Sega dips its toes into the console market once again...

@BulkSlash Yeah, hearing about that has my inner skeptic on alert. I'd love a plug-in Genesis that's actually good, but Sega's shown on multiple occasions that it favors embracing the cheap cash-in. It certainly would be nice if they made an actual good plug-in Genesis, but I'm not counting on it.

I really hope it'll be a mini-Megadrive this side of the Atlantic.

@moochan Yeah, the main draw for AtGames Console to me is the Master System and Game Gear games.

I'm not as enthusiastic about this compared to Nintendo's mini systems compared to the fact that Sega gave us nearly three decades of the Sega Genesis in one way or another. The three models of the original console? Easily available and I kept buying and repairing them one by one. And then game the AtGames which were ALWAYS disappointing, fitting of Sega of America's rep.

I agree with LBD, give us a SMS or GG or SG-1000 mini. Hell, start preparing the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast games for the PS4 already! We want Jet Set Radio Future!

Sadly, Kotaku is reporting that this is using AtGames piss-poor technology. No sale. At this point I’d rather the mad geniuses at Analogue make a Mega NT with their FPGA technology. F*ck Sega and their pachinko/Sonic BS.

@jimgamer having said that, the M2 created Sega Ages ports (TF IV!!!) sound very exciting indeed. Thank you Sega!

Sega should do what third-party licencees have failed at for many years, i.e. make a mini Genesis with accurate emulation and a great game selection. Sadly, if the Kotaku report is true, the Genesis mini will be using AtGames's inadequate technology.Edited 2 weeks ago by SuperShinobi

Not as special as the NES/SNES mini because these games have been overwhelmingly rereleased and available each and every generation, often multiple times throughout different packages.

Now a Saturn or Dreamcast mini would be outstanding. Charge $200 bucks; don't care. Having the option to play Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga again would be great. And even better would be if I could finally play those games in English rather than the affordable-but-still-Japanese versions would be a treat.

But yeah. I've no interest in the genesis-mini. Hopeful it does well though if it inspires SEGA to pursue a Saturn or Dreamcast version.

@Moggraider Odd fact: The PS1 that was released in Japan for the Mega Drive, was actually the Mark III code running on the Z80 included in the Mega Drive, which was mostly used for sound output. The Powerbase Converter, an adapter that allowed playing SMS/Mark3 games on the Genesis/Megadrive, just connected to the right pins to access the Z80. The Phantasy Star I cart was basically wired like a Powerbase Converter.

Considering AtGames newest system is definitely more Android/Pi based: https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/13/16051258/sega-genesis-flashback-hd-review

Sega would have to put them through the ringer if the license agreement is still in effect.
