Sega announced a price, release date, and some games for its retro mini console: the Sega Genesis Mini. The throwback console will include 40 games and will be available on September 19 for $79.99.
There will be 40 games total for the Genesis Mini, with what looks to be some regional differences for software depending on whether it's a Japanese, or U.S./European version of the mini console. So far, Sega's confirmed the following 10 games out of 40 for the U.S. version of the Genesis Mini.
- Altered Beast
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- Comix Zone
- Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Gunstar Heroes
- Shining Force
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Spare Harrier 2
- ToeJam & Earl.
The Japanese version of the Mega Drive Mini will include: Sonic 2, Puyo Puyo 2, Shining Force, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Powerball, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Rent-a-Hero, Spare Harrier 2, and Madou Monogatari. The European version will have the same games as the U.S. version.
Sega first announced plans for the mini Genesis last year (Mega Drive in Japan and Europe), but delayed the console to better polish the system in time for its 35th anniversary. Sega previously announced the console would be based on the AtGames-developed Genesis Flashback, but Sega dropped AtGames in order to achieve a higher level of quality.
Many rejoiced considering the negative reception to the Flashback HD. No doubt the quality found in Nintendo's retro mini offerings also drove some of that decision making.
Sega says that the developers of Sega Ages, M2, is developing the software for the Genesis Mini, and that it will ship with two three-button controllers in the U.S. that can connect to the system via USB. Also, Streets of Rage composer Yuzo Koshiro will be creating the menu music for the device.
You can visit the official Sega Genesis Mini website right now where you can pre-order the console. It will be available worldwide on September 19, 2019 for $79.99 in the U.S.
