Yacht Club's Shovel Knight certainly has gained a lot of traction in just two short years—it's the only indie game with a dedicated Amiibo, after all.
Even if there's no sequel planned for SK at the moment, 2017 will be a big year for the brand: Specter of Torment, the second DLC, launches early next year, and Shovel Knight himself will be making an appearance in Yooka-Laylee, the spiritual successor to Rare's beloved N64 platformers. (Except Donkey Kong 64.)
The announcement comes straight from Yacht Club Games' website:
Whoahhh!!!! Isn’t it amazing to see Shovel Knight rendered in 3D?! It was a team effort too! Our very own Sean Velasco made all the funny noises for Shovel Knight’s voice. Is that what Shovel Knight really sounds like?
Yacht Club Games designed and built the model itself while Playtonic rigged and animated it to life. Shovel Knight sure looks comfortable in a 3D world. Who knows…maybe one day we’ll see Shovel Knight running and jumping around his very own 64-styled adventure! Wouldn’t that be neat?
All in all, 2017 seems like a pretty good year for indie spiritual successors to old console games. Be sure to look for more coverage of Yooka-Laylee right here on USgamer.
