The Minecraft gang is on the way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in just a week, but before those blocky pals get a shot at being immortalized in plastic, NFC-enabled figurine form, Nintendo's got a backlog to work through. Today, Nintendo announced three upcoming Smash Bros. Amiibo character releases for 2021, but don't get hyped up to grow your collection "soon."
As Nintendo of America confirms on Twitter, the next new round of Smash Bros. Amiibo-featuring Terry, Byleth, and Banjo & Kazooie-are actually coming in Fall 2021. For those of you who've been having trouble keeping track of the months of late, that's about a year from now.
Why announce these Amiibo so early? Well, here's a counterpoint: why not? The Hero from Dragon Quest and Persona's Joker join the Smash Bros. Amiibo roster this month, and then it'll be about a year until Terry and co. arrive. Perhaps it's better to let collectors know about the long drought now rather than keep them wondering why it's been so long since the last release.
If you're interested in more than just Smash Bros. Amiibo, there are more on the way between now and next fall. In February 2021, Nintendo will release new Cat Peach and Cat Mario Amiibo ahead of the re-release of Super Mario 3D World for the Nintendo Switch.
While this news means it might be a long, long time before we ever see a Minecraft Steve Amiibo out of Nintendo, we're not far out from the character's Smash debut. As announced with Minecraft Live over the weekend, Steve and his famous friends will join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of its second (and final) fighter pass on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
