The Sonic Game Fans Love to Hate is Being Remade in Unity, and You Can Play the Demo Now

One of the most hated (or loved) Sonic games ever is getting a new lease on life.

Sonic the Hedgehog has gotten many makeovers. He's gone from 2D to 3D; from goofy to almost serious; from 3D back to 2D to even 2D-inspired 3D. The blue-spiked hedgehog has, basically, seen it all. One of Sonic's most memorable outings was back in 2006 though, with the plainly titled Sonic the Hedgehog for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Only, it was memorable for the wrong reasons.

It wasn't good! At least, that's the reputation that has always followed it. Where else will you see Sonic kiss a human woman? Only in Sonic '06! And thanks to a fan, it's now playable in HD glory. At least, at some capacity it is.

Known as ChaosX on YouTube, the fan developer and a few friends, according to a trailer's YouTube description, are currently hard at work on a complete remake of Sonic '06 in the game engine Unity. Yesterday, the team uploaded a free demo of the remake for PC, as it plugs away bringing the controversial Sonic game to high definition. Judging from the trailer too, it looks quite excellent and faithful to the original too.

Fan remakes have grown more and more common over the years, and past Sonic games are no exception. Sonic '06 was even getting a Unity remake back in 2017. As Dark Side of Gaming reports though, the development team Sonic NEXT PC Team has been largely silent since it released a demo back then.

It's shaping up to be a big year for Sonic. Later this year, Sonic the Hedgehog will be getting his own Hollywood live action-CGI movie, much like Pokemon's Detective Pikachu that's releasing in just a few weeks. Unlike Detective Pikachu though, we've barely got a glimpse of what the Ben Schwartz-voiced hedgehog will look like on the big screen, with only leaked marketing images to go by so far. It's still exciting though, and if Schwartz's past comedy is to go by, it should at the very least be entertaining popcorn fare.

If the movie on the horizon has you wanting to take a trip down memory lane, then popping into the new fan-made demo for Sonic '06 might be just the ticket you need. You can take it for a spindash yourself after downloading it via GoogleDrive or Mediafire.

Thanks, Dark Side of Gaming.
