Yesterday Miriam Ziegler, one half of an Austrian figure skating pair with Severin Kiefer, retrieved an unusual token after the team's performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics: A Gengar Pokémon plushie someone threw on the ice.
Pokémon subreddit subscriber "TheRagingTuna" noticed the doll and posted a snapshot of the happy new trainer. Other redditors immediately started joking about how the doll probably started life as a Haunter but became a Gengar after it hit the ice (in Pokémon games, Haunter can only evolve into Gengar if it's traded between people).
No-one's been able to figure out "Why Gengar?" though. There's no indication Ziegler has a special fondness for Pokémon. One redditor suggested she had a beloved Gengar that carried her through Pokémon Yellow, but there's no evidence to suggest that's the case.
Maybe the answer is the obvious one right in front of us: Gengar is strong and cool and bursting with magical powers. Who wouldn't want one as a friend and guardian?
Just don't ... don't make it mad.
