Sonic Mania isn't even out yet (it's out August 15), and it's already racing its way to the prestigious land of video game soundtrack vinyls. The type of treatment that most games don't even get until way after release, as a sort of nostalgia trap. Yet here comes Sonic Mania, breaking the trend, with a special blue vinyl for its upcoming soundtrack.
The announcement comes just in time for Sonic's 26th birthday, now a hedgehog who has had the ability to rent a car in the United States for an entire year of his lifespan. The Sonic Mania LP features select tracks by composer Tee Lopes, though a full track listing has yet to be announced. (Probably guarded by SEGA because, y'know, stage spoilers.) Listeners won't be stuck with just the old school record, the LP also comes with lossy and lossless downloads of the soundtrack. Given Sonic Mania's entire schtick being its retro vibes, a vinyl of its soundtrack feels just right.
The shiny LP will be released in three editions: a "limited edition" available exclusively through Data Discs' site, a translucent blue, and a classic black. Past soundtracks sold and produced by Data Discs include Shenmue, Streets of Rage, Out Run, Panzer Dragoon, and more. Pre-orders will open for Sonic Mania's soundtrack in mid-July through Data Discs, and you can listen to the game's opening track "Lights, Camera, Action! (Studiopolis Act 1)" below from SoundCloud.
