Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Set For Release in April 2022

The sequel retains the original director and star.

You'd be forgiven for missing the announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's release date last night on July 23, amidst the Xbox Series X games reveal showcase. But Paramount Pictures revealed yesterday that a sequel is in development for release on April 8, 2022.

It's hard to believe that the first Sonic the Hedgehog film actually released earlier this year, mainly because 2020 has felt like a decade packed into seven months at this point. The movie was something of a surprise hit on release, and was the second highest-grossing film of 2020 so far with $306 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo (coming in just behind Bad Boys For Life).

The movie's run at theaters was cut short due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic however. The pandemic has shuttered theaters throughout the world for a number of months now, as well as delaying multiple movies set for release earlier this year like Top Gun: Maverick and Mulan (as Paramount revealed yesterday alongside the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel announcement.

Earlier this year in May, a report revealed that director Jeff Fowler was set to return for an unannounced Sonic sequel. Additionally, he'd be teaming up again with writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey from the first movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog was a hit at the box office earlier this year, but our editor-in-chief Kat was a little less convinced. In her review, Kat said that after all the hyper and controversy surrounding the movie (Sonic's teeth in particular), the movie was merely a competent experience.
