Sony Secretly Released a Quieter PS4 Pro

Do you hear that? I don't.

News by Matt Kim, .

Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro is a great console for people with 4K televisions, but one of the most common complaints is how loud the machine gets sometimes. According to a new report, Sony silently released a quieter PS4 Pro model into the wild.

In the new Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Pro bundle lies an updated PS4 Pro model, the CUH-7200. The new model comes with two changes, a figure-8 power connector instead of the kettle-style connector, and a quieter fan. Our friends at Digital Foundry backs this with an analysis.

According to them the 7200 series is a "night and day" improvement over the launch 7000 series. The change is thanks to the new version's heat management. The fans in the new 7200 series, as well as the 7100 series which are the limited translucent PS4 Pros, run slower than the launch models. This results in a hotter console, yes, but also makes substantially less noise.

This resulted in the newer PS4 Pro systems measuring sound measures of 44 decibels compared to the 50dB of the launch consoles. Another improvement is the 7200 models' power management with drew a consistent 170-watt power. The launch models tended to spike power consumption under intense load resulting in the fan speeding up or growing louder at random intervals.

So far, the only way to get a quieter PS4 Pro is in the Red Dead Redemption 2 bundle, or if you're lucky, one of the limited-edition clear PS4 Pro machines. Launch PS4 Pro consoles have been hard to come by lately so Sony is perhaps in the process of replacing the old models with new ones before the holidays.
