Souls-Like Battle Royale Game Egress Gets Closed Beta Release Date

Winner winner Estus dinner. Probably tastes like Huel.

A closed beta release date has been announced for Egress, the Dark Souls meets Battle Royale game from developer Fazan Games. It'll launch August 1, and will see players using hardcore Souls-like combat to battle it out for supremacy.

You can check out a new trailer for Estus below. You'll no doubt notice, almost immediately, that the game is very much going after the Dark Souls crowd, though puts a battle royale spin on things.

Fazan Games released some alpha gameplay earlier this year, which you can watch below. It gives us more of an idea as to how the game works. Players are dropped onto a multi-level map, with a focus on verticality. After a short while, water starts to flood the map, so players must climb higher and higher to stay alive. This slowly decreases the map size, and forces players to fight each other. It's an interesting take on the classic shrinking blue circle we're all used to at this point.

It seems to be a hodge-podge of Victorian, Lovecraftian and Medieval influences, with characters using everything from katana-esque swords to giant maces to beat each other to death. Even the HUD seems ripped straight out of a Souls game, with a health and stamina bar in the top left corner, and flasks equipped to the d-pad.

Egress was announced February 8 earlier this year, but seems to have come a long way since then. If you're looking to jump in and try the game early, you can sign up for the closed beta using this link.
