There's been relatively little information to go on about Spelunky 2 until now. Developer Derek Yu has now revealed that we can expect the followup to the hit indie platformer to release at some point later this year.
Yu began a recent tweet thread earlier today saying he'd give people an update on Spelunky 2. Then in a tweet further down, he elaborated by saying "we're going all in on Spelunky 2 to release later this year! We'll holler when we know exactly when.
So I'm gonna do #artvsartist #artvsartist2020 for the first time and also take the opportunity to give a small update on Spelunky 2 and UFO 50 for the people who have been asking (or just wondering quietly)! Thanks for checking in! Here goes...— Derek Yu (@mossmouth) April 30, 2020
It's surely music to the ears of those that have been eagerly awaiting Mossmouth's followup to Spelunky, since it was first announced way back in 2017. Delayed out of its original launch window of 2019, we'll now be in for a real treat with Spelunky 2 later on in 2020.
Earlier this year in March, Yu and company showed off new Spelunky 2 screens for the first time, giving us a look at some of the brand new environments for the sequel. There's also a look at some of the new NPCs we'll be spelunking around with come later this year.
Right now, there's no firm release date for Spelunky 2. When it does release though, the game will be launching on both PC and PS4.
