The next step of Spelunky is coming very soon. During today's State of Play showcase, developer Mossmouth confirmed that Spelunky 2 will launch on PlayStation 4 on Sept. 15.
That's not a very long wait, though it's been years since Spelunky first delved into ancient ruins. The sequel was announced back in 2017 and has been in development since, with developer Derek Yu confirming earlier this year that the team was going "all in" on a 2020 launch.
In a PlayStation blog post, Yu says the world Spelunky 2 is "much more expansive and well-connected" than the original. That hasn't changed the amount of time needed for a successful run, but it does mean things are a bit more dense and varied.
A big bonus is that Spelunky 2 will also have online multiplayer, both cooperative and competitive. Alongside Deathmatch, there's a Hold the Idol mode to bolster Spelunky 2's multiplayer offerings, in case you really want to infuriate friends and family across the globe.
The original Spelunky is a hallmark of the run-based, "roguelike" genre that's been played and sped through for years. There are high expectations for its follow-up. With all this time and effort, it looks like it could pay off. Spelunky 2 hits PS4 on Sept. 15, 2020.
