Ever since Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced Marvel's Avengers, one of the primary questions has been: What about Spider-Man? Given a very successful game on PlayStation 4, there were questions about whether Marvel's Avengers could even touch everyone's favorite web-slinger. Crystal Dynamics has admitted to having access to hundreds of heroes and 80 years of Marvel's history, but not having Spider-Man would feel like an oversight.
Today, Crystal Dynamics revealed that Spider-Man would be coming to Marvel's Avengers… only on PlayStation. Yeah, the webhead is coming in early 2021 for free for all PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players. Likely, whatever licensing allows Insomniac to make Marvel's Spider-Man and the upcoming Miles Morales game, can be stretched to the PlayStation version of Avengers, but no further.
According to Crystal Dynamics associate art director Jeff Adams, the team is currently designing Spider-Man so that he'll fit within the universe of Marvel's Avengers. That includes bringing over his acrobatic abilities and web-slinger gadgets. Spider-Man will also have several unique skill trees like the rest of the Avengers on the roster.
Spider-Man's look will be inspired by the original costume from Steve Ditko. "Steve Ditko set the standard with his Spider-Man design, and John Romita Sr. evolved it into an icon recognized the world over. Fans can expect to see Ditko and Romita’s influence in our take on the hero, with nods to other talented artists that have defined the character’s look over his long history," said Adams.
The inclusion of Spider-Man on an exclusive basis explains why Crystal Dynamics focused on cross-generational play instead of full cross-play during its announcement. "We love the idea of cross-platform play," Avengers creative director Shaun Escayg told Shacknews. "It's not something that we are currently doing. Cross-generational, yes. Cross-platform, not at this time." With exclusive characters like Spider-Man, only PlayStation players can team up, as PC and Xbox players won't have access to the hero at all.
Before Spider-Man launches, all players of Marvel's Avengers will get access to Hawkeye. If you're prepping for an adventure with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, you can read our hands-on with Marvel's Avengers, and an extensive look at everything players will enjoy during the endgame. No, not that Endgame.
PlayStation 4 players will get a chance to experience Marvel's Avengers for themselves on Friday, August 7, when the beta begins. PC and Xbox One players won't get to join in on the fun until the next week, on August 14, before the game goes into full open beta on all three platforms on August 21. Marvel's Avengers is coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Google Stadia on September 4, with free next-gen upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
