Splatoon 2 Global Testfire Showing Off Nintendo's Online This Weekend

If you're looking for something to play on your Switch, Nintendo has something for you.

We knew it was coming, but Nintendo has sent over a gentle reminder: The Splatoon 2 Global Testfire is coming to the Nintendo Switch this weekend, from March 24 to 26. Potential inklings can download the free demo on the Switch eShop right now. Then you jump online during the test periods, via the system's built-in WiFi, to play!

The full list of test periods includes:

  • March 24: 12-12:59 p.m. PT
  • March 24: 8-8:59 p.m. PT
  • March 25: 4-4:59 a.m. PT
  • March 25: 12-12:59 p.m. PT
  • March 25: 8-8:59 p.m. PT
  • March 26: 4-4:59 a.m. PT

The Splatoon 2 Global Testfire includes tweaked versions of classic Splatoon 2 weapons, like the Splat Roller and Splat Charger, in addition to new weapons, like the Splat Dualies. Players can control the game via the Joy-Cons or the Switch Pro Controller. Nintendo is encouraging players to use the system's Capture feature to take screenshots and share them via Facebook or Twitter.

Splatoon 2's Global Testfire will be the first look at Nintendo's online infrastructure. Until now, only Super Bomberman R and Fast RMX have allowed online play and neither allowed for players to matchmake with friends at launch; Super Bomberman R recently added the ability to create private rooms, while Fast RMX will allow friend grouping in a future update. We're currently unsure if Splatoon 2 will rely on central servers or peer-to-peer networking.

Once the Testfire is done, the next big test of Nintendo's online is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, coming on April 28.

M.H. Williams is new to the journalism game, but he's been a gamer since the NES first graced American shores. Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
