The battle for Bikini Bottom will rage on once again. THQ Nordic's remake of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, dubbed "Rehydrated," will launch on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on June 23, 2020.
Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated brings the original SpongeBob platformer back to life with new graphics, as well as cut content and some new features. One of those includes a "horde mode" multiplayer for two players, either on or offline, which seems like a strange addition. Never really thought of SpongeBob and Gears of War having anything in common.
If you're wondering why a Nickelodeon platformer is getting the full-blown remake treatment, it's because SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is actually a surprisingly solid platformer. The player can swap between the various cast members who each have their own traversal and combat abilities much like Donkey Kong 64, and there are a lot of collectibles and reasons to explore.
Battle for Bikini Bottom has even proven to be a compelling speedrunning game, with lots of interesting tricks and glitches that I hope still make it into the Rehydrated version. Considering it hasn't been that long since last year's disastrous 8chan AMA incident, a solid SpongeBob remake might garner some good will for THQ Nordic again.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated launches on June 23, 2020. There's also a $300 collector's edition dubbed the "F.U.N. Edition," which comes with a spatula, figurines, tiki keyrings, and a pair of SpongeBob socks. That's a, uh, pretty expensive pair of socks.
