Sports Story, the Follow-Up to Golf Story, Has Been Delayed

The team needs more time to try and fully realize its ambitions.

Sidebar Games has announced today that its upcoming sporting adventure Sports Story has been delayed. Previously set for 2020, the team is taking more time to incorporate all the things it wants to do within the wide, wide world of sports.

The follow-up to 2017's indie golf RPG hit Golf Story, Sports Story debuted last December with some daring new ideas. Those ideas being, as the name suggests, expanding beyond the realm of golf.

The trailer above includes not just new sports, like tennis and soccer, but new environments to explore that seem pretty wild. The new story is expanding well beyond the putters and clubs, but it'll need some more time to get all of that into one package.

In an update on Twitter today, Sidebar Games announced a delay of Sports Story, in order to take some more time and ensure everything makes it into the game.

"The game has become rather ambitious and we are excited about how it could turn out," reads the statement. "But the price is currently being paid as we try to make our plans into reality. We are eager to reveal the results of these past [two] years so please look forward to future updates."

The studio also followed up with a fun in-universe video of Coach explaining the delay, while other characters tease potential events. Whether a "Golf Pinball machine" is really happening or not, that sounds rad.

This announcement came shortly after news that Nintendo is hosting an Indie World Showcase tomorrow morning. It seems unlikely we'll get any news about it there. I'm a little bummed, but content to wait; Sidebar blew me away with the surprise fun of Golf Story, and I'm eager for whatever ambitions they have for a sequel, whenever it's ready.
