Square Enix has announced a new Tomb Raider game today, but stopped short of offering any concrete details.
In a Twitter post, Square Enix said that a "new Tomb Raider game is coming[,]" but can't quite announce further details for the game just yet. This is because Square Enix says it is taking a "new approach" for the upcoming Lara Croft adventure.
As you might remember, a new Tomb Raider project was potentially leaked earlier this year when screenshots of several "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" assets were seen on the laptop of a public transit commuter. No word yet on whether this new Tomb Raider project and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are the same game.
Update: One eagle-eyed video game writer discovered a potential hidden message.
Huh. This is something. First letter of each sentence, it spells out Shadow. As in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. https://t.co/ijSFLq5WcM— Johnny Cullen, The Dayman (aaah) (@JohnnyCullen) December 7, 2017
Additionally, Square Enix announced that "it won't be very long between the official reveal and when you can play." This is pretty interesting considering Rise of the Tomb Raider featured a timed exclusivity deal which prevented PlayStation players from playing the game for a full year after the Xbox One release.
The quick turnaround between announcement and release date, as well as the new approach Square Enix alludes to makes me wonder if the new Tomb Raider game won't feature some kind of episodic release structure.
Either way, be on the look out in 2018 for when Square Enix decides to officially unveil the new Tomb Raider game.
