E3 2019 is about to begin, which means that we're almost done with the press conferences! Square Enix is up this evening, and fans are ready to finally see what Marvel's Avengers looks like and how far Final Fantasy 7 was going to go into the original game's plot.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Square Enix kicked off the press conference with the first (or second, depending on who you are) thing that everyone was waiting for: Final Fantasy 7 Remake. FF7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase took to the stage to talk briefly about the game, and thanked fans for their patience during the game's long development period. In an odd tidbit, Kitase talked about this being the first part of this project, expanding on the story of Midgard to the tune of two Blu-ray discs.
The game's action combat got a highlight as well. Cloud can attack and block in real-time, but there's also an Active Time Battle bar, that will slow down time when its fun. Activating the ATB charge you have saved up moves the game into Tactical mode, where you can use more interesting and unique abilities.
We already knew the release date thanks to the Final Fantasy 7 Concert, but Square Enix showed off an extended trailer for the game. The remake won't extend beyond Midgard, but fans did get a chance to see the Remake's version of Tifa. While she might not have looked as great as Aerith, seeing her dealing with enemies with fists and kicks was exciting. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to Playstation on March 3, 2020.
Life is Strange 2
Square Enix showed off a series of influencer and reviewer reactions to the current episodes of Dontnod Entertainment's Life is Strange 2. Episode 4 is scheduled to launch on August 22, 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition
The classic Gamecube title is back with a new Remastered release. It has a new online multiplayer mode, so you don't have gather link cables and Game Boy Advances anymore. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition is coming to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS this Winter.
The Last Remnant on Switch
This one was a bit of an odd pull, the Square Enix' The Last Remnant is also coming back on new platforms. The Last Remnant Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch, and in a small surprise, it's actually available tonight on the eShop.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
The publisher showed off a new trailer for Dragon Quest Builders 2, showing the basic gameplay. Players will joined by Malroth, the final boss of Dragon Quest 2, as a companion in their quest to rebuild the world. The trailer showed off the multiple islands aand four-player cooperative play. There will be a demo available on the PlayStation Store on June 27, with the full release of PS4 and Switch coming July 12.
Dragon Quest 11: Definitive Edition
There was also a new Dragon Quest 11: Definitive Edition trailer, with the full title of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition S. Yes, if you've been waiting for the Switch version of the game since the PS4 version's Western launch in September 2018, it's finally heading your way. The Switch version features the same 2D sprite mode of the 3DS version, and it'll all be yours this Fall.
Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind
The previously announced Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC is still on the horizon! Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind is coming this Winter to Xbox One and PS4, featuring the shenanigans of Xigbar and Luxord. I don't know what those words mean, but I'm sure Kingdom Hearts fans are excited.
Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers
Shadowbringers ended up on the E3 2019 stage with a brand-new launch trailer. The game already has a release date of July 2, 2019, but Square Enix wanted to show off the game's lore on last time. If you don't play FF14, the various names and places mostly sounded like Kingdom Hearts 3: Re:Mind did to me: endless gibberish.
Dying Light 2
Square Enix recently picked up the publishing rights for Techland's upcoming sequel, Dying Light 2. There was a brief trailer showing off all the intense parkour zombie action. Dying Light 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring 2020.
Romancing Saga 3 and Saga Scarlet Grace
These two Saga games are coming to damned near every platform under the sun. Romancing Saga 3 is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Switch, Steam, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. Saga Scarlet Grace: Amibitions is the latest Saga release, heading West on Switch, PS4, Steam, Android, and iOS. No release date was given.
Square Enix showed off a new game from the folks at People Can Fly. The Outriders trailer showed hardened soldiers in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but there was a little bit of magic thrown in there for good measure. It's a cooperative shooter, offering drop-in, drop-out online play with up to three players. The developer showed off some very odd weapons and talked heavily about a strong narrative. Outriders is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in Summer 2020.
After Outriders, Square Enix went in a completely different direction with Tokyo RPG Factory's Oninaki. After two rough games, the developer going for broke with Oninaki, from the director of Chrono Trigger, Takashi Tokita, Oninaki is coming to Switch, PS4, and Steam on August 22, 2019
Final Fantasy 8 Remastered
It was rumored to be a remake, but instead Final Fantasy 8 is getting a quick remaster this year. Squall, Rinoa, and the rest of the gang are back to draw out all of the magic. Final Fantasy 8 Remastered is coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam in 2019.
Finally, Square Enix finally showed off its upcoming Avengers game. The story begins during Avengers Day in San Francisco, with the opening of a new West Coast Avengers branch and maiden voyage of a new Terrigen-powered helicarrier. Things grow horribly wrong, and the helicarrier sinks into the San Francisco Bay, contaminating it with Terrigen. The Avengers are blamed for the accident, and the game's proper story picks up five years later.
Marvel's Avengers is coming from Crystal Dynamics, combining "epic action-adventure" with the studio's interpretation of the Avengers, with an all-new story. Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Widow are the primary characters in the launch version, though Hank Pym was shown and the Terrigen definitely hints at potential Inhuman characters like Ms. Marvel.
Avengers seems to be an online service game of some sort, with online action with up to four players. Crystal Dynamics promised the ability to customize a growing roster of heroes, with every new hero and region being free. The developers promised no random loot boxes. Marvel's Avengers is coming to PS4, Xbox One ,Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020. Crystal Dynamics also promised early beta access for PlayStation 4 owners and an additional surprise (some form of the Sony-exclusive Spider-Man perhaps?).
There were also a full smaller announcements during the press conference. Circuit Superstars, a top-down arcade racer, is coming in 2020 to PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch. Battalion 1944 is getting the new Eastern Front update, available now on Steam.
