Square Enix is Pitching Final Fantasy VII Remake as an Action Game in Job Listings

Brave new world.

It feels like all the new information that comes out for the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII is from job listings. Square Enix's latest job call, this time for a new VFX designer, pitches potential hires to leave their mark on Final Fantasy VII Remake which is being remade as "an action game."

In a job listing translated from Japanese (thanks, Siliconera) the position requires a VFX designer on Final Fantasy VII Remake who will use Unreal Engine 4's cascade particle editor for use in battles and fields, as well as someone who can implement event scene backgrounds. Square Enix describes the post as "a position that will carry the core of Final Fantasy VII Remake that is being remade as an action game."

The use of the word action is no accident as Square Enix adds that the job is "a chance to challenge the world with a new Final Fantasy action."

Of course, "action" is a pretty general term in video games and encompasses a wide range of subgenres. But when the PlayStation Experience 2015 trailer debuted, there were some glimpses of gameplay that fans noticed were basically from an action game. Nomura later confirmed that gameplay would be "action-based."

Some fans didn't take too well to the news that Final Fantasy VII Remake might ditch RPG trappings, but the new listing seems to solidify Square Enix's position on what kind of game the remake will actually be. Also, it should be noted that a previous job listing for Final Fantasy VII Remake stressed that the remake should be treated as a "new creation" and, confusingly, "Not a 'remake'" so fans should be prepared for drastic changes in Final Fantasy VII (not a) Remake.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced back in 2015, but work on the project seems to have only really shifted into high gear. Last we heard about the remake in March (via yet another job listing) seemed to indicate that the development team was still staffing up key positions.
