Square Enix Re-Announces Dragon Quest XI S for Switch

Yes, the Switch version of the game is still coming.

News by Mike Williams, .

When Dragon Quest XI was first announced by Square Enix in 2015, the company also said a version for the then-named Nintendo NX was coming. As the game rounded its launch on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS in Japan, word on a port for the recently-released Nintendo Switch remained quiet. Even when Dragon Quest XI launched for PC in North America and Europe, Switch fans were still waiting on any word about their version.

Today at the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix confirmed that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is still coming to Nintendo Switch, albeit under a slightly-different name. The new version is Dragon Quest XI S, according to a tweet by Takashi Mochizuki of the Wall Street Journal.

There's still no release date, nor is there any indication what style of game Dragon Quest XI S will be. The PlayStation 4 and PC version of the game has a full 3D presentation, while the Japan-only 3DS release offers a hybrid 2d and 3D presentation.

I am pretty much expecting a PS4 port with minor additions. The DS aesthetic won't work on a single screen.

It really is astonishing that this was, I’m pretty sure, the first game announced for the Switch, and here we are, a year and a half after the Switch came out, and we still don’t have a release date or anything. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait (and since I don’t have a PS4 or a PC, I don’t have a choice anyway), but man! Come on!

Have the PC version and finally been playing it. I would only really replay this if it happen to have the 3DS feature of letting you pick from 3D to 16-bit. Would look lovely on the Switch screen and TV. I know it's not meant for people to double dip but man that feature alone will get me to easily.

I emailed squareenix, asking about the 3DS port. After a few automated messages they eventually said my suggestion would be forwarded through to the proper parties - who knows, if we make enough noise about wanting the 3DS port in english, we might just get it... But it'll probably be really late like Dragon Quest 7's 3DS port.

It's worth a shot. Guys, let's flood squarenix's inbox with emails asking about the 3DS port!

@Funny_Colour_Blue Considering Nintendo seems intent on keeping 3DS afloat for the foreseeable future, I'm surprised they didn't take on the DQ11 3DS localization themselves.

I would have totally bought this version, but now that I'm approximately 50 hours into DQXI I can safely say I do not regret purchasing it when I did, but it would have been perfect on Switch. I doubt I'll double dip, but I completely understand waiting for this version.

I suspect that they are porting over some of quality of life improvements of the PC version and seek to tempt some fans into double dipping. Messed up considering they announced the Switch version before the game had shown much more then a logo.

@One_Vurfed_Gwrx actually you'd be surprised. The 3ds version uses the dual screen thing for the opening and then it's a church visit each time.

It makes the opening less cool, but you could totally do that on a single screen.

My guess? A slightly less-pretty port of the PS4 version with some additions like some new dungeons and voice acting.

@NiceGuyNeon I have the same feelings. I'm glad I got the game as soon as possible. I would have bought the Switch version if it came out on September 4, but unless the Switch version has some drastic new features I won't double-dip.
