Stardock today announced the first details of its planned Star Control revival, Star Control: Origins. The new title will make players the captain of Earth's first interstellar starship, exploring a vast procedurally-generated galaxy full of unique planets and adventures. Star Control: Origins is planned for release on PC and consoles, with the PC release coming first in 2017.
"We Earthlings are the newcomers to the galactic scene," said Origins executive producer Brad Wardell. "The dozen plus space-faring species have been hatching their schemes since before we got out of trees. Now, suddenly, they have to deal with those meddling apes from Sol 3 who threaten to upset the plot."
"Star Control is ultimately about us Earthlings exploring the galaxy, finding and talking to strange alien civilizations, and hopefully living to tell the tale," he added. "We are hopeful those who remember the original trilogy will like the direction we're taking here while at the same time introducing a whole new generation to the awesomeness of a game that combined action, adventure, and roleplaying in a sci-fi game simultaneously."
Stardock acquired the rights to the Star Control franchise way back in 2013 and established a studio dedicated to the franchise in Towson, Maryland. The game is in its early stages at this point, with an available Founder's program. Players interested in joining the Founder's program gain access to the upcoming beta, the Founder's Vault, mod tools, private journals and more for $35. It's worth noting that Stardock is pretty good on its Early Access and Founder's program promises.
