Star Fox 2 Programmer on SNES Classic Release: "It's Bloody Awesome"

Q-Games' Dylan Cuthbert weighs in on the official Star Fox 2 release.

One of the big ways the SNES Classic is differentiating itself from Nintendo's previous miniaturized classic effort is by including Star Fox 2, a never-before-released video game. The SNES Classic is the first, and so far only official way to play the game. Now, one of the game's original developers, Dylan Cuthbert, has weighed in on Star Fox 2's release (spoiler: he's ecstatic).

"It made my day... It's bloody awesome," Cuthbert said in an email to Kotaku about Star Fox 2's official release.

Cuthbert, who eventually went on to found Q-Games, was a programmer for Nintendo during the 1990s where he helped develop the original Star Fox, as well as Star Fox 2. Despite being shown off publicly in 1995, Star Fox 2 never received an official release.

According to Cuthbert, Nintendo felt that the 3D graphics in Star Fox 2 couldn't compete with the new 3D graphics in consoles like the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation, and Nintendo decided to cut the project rather than risk unfavorable comparisons. "I agree that strategically (if not emotionally) it was the correct decision. But now our older retro form of 3D is the new cool kid on the block, it's perfect timing!"

There are some questions however about how complete Star Fox 2 is. Cuthbert says a complete version of the game exists, but that version of the game so far hasn't been seen. As of now, there are only buggy versions illegally distributed online.

According to the recent email interview, Cuthbert says he wasn't asked to tweak any of his original work from 1995, but sounds confident about the product that he finished back in the 90s. "I had completely given up on the chance that it might come out. I spent two years of hard work making it and loved every minute. Finally people get to see all the little cool tweaks and things, all the touches and special ideas we threw in there. This game had so much experimentation at the start and that really shows in some of the encounters you'll come across."

Either way, Cuthbert is clearly ecstatic about SNES release of Starfox 2. Here's a photo of CUthbert celebrating with a few members of the Starfox 2 dev team the game's launch nearly two decades after development ended on the project.

Cuthbert currently heads up Q-Games in Kyoto, Japan. USgamer caught up with the developer last year at BitSummit, but of course none of us, not even Cuthbert, could predict Star Fox 2 might one day be something we'd all be talking about again.

    I realize that Cuthbert acknowledges this, but it has to be really satisfying for him to see this release. There are so many stories of programmers/designers in the games industry that have to be frustrated at "losing" so much of the time they spent on a project.

    In great cases like Blizzard's MMO, Titan, they're able to take what they learned and do something like an Overwatch. In others like the Star Wars multiplayer game for 360 (with Inperials vs Rebels, 4v4 FPS or something like that), they have to settle for a leak showing off some footage.

    @ShadowTheSecond The full interview is pretty interesting. He talks about learning from that experience - that its important to enjoy the game development process itself, because you never know if the game you're working on will be axed or turn out rubbish or whatever.
